Hi, welcome to the Mobile Sawing Services web site. We focus solely on mobile sawing of timber at the owner’s premises. We are located in the North West however we cover the majority of the UK mainland. The sawing is mainly carried out using a mobile band saw and a simple, but versatile chainsaw mill. One of the major advantages of the bandsaw over other types of saw is that the kerf (hence sawdust waste) is less than one eighth of an inch. So, for every eight cuts you only lose one inch of timber. With other popular saws this ratio is every four cuts you lose one inch. If each board has a value of say £20 this difference soon mounts up so I always recommend people to try and use a narrow kerf bandsaw.
The piccy on the left illustrates the difference in yield and waste between the two types of saw.
This sawmill has fully hydraulic timber handling which includes loading and computer assisted head positioning which ensures the planks are of a constant thickness. This dramatically speeds up production of the saw and is a real boon when it comes to thicknessing. One of the major advantages of milling on site is that the normal transport costs to and from a mill are removed which offers a significant saving over normally purchased timber, especially on small numbers of high value timbers. The value of our native hardwood is often massively under- estimated, for example a 3 feet diameter butt, 10 feet long can have a value of £1000 in its green (wet) state after milling and if the timber is air dried this value is likely to increase to around £3000. If you sold this piece of timber 'in the round' to the local firewood dealer you would be lucky to realise a meagre £100. So, if you have access to one tree or several then it is well worth getting them milled. Our contracts range in size from one tree in someone’s front garden, to larger scale operations for timber merchants, county councils and country estates. The timber is put to a variety of uses, which include general construction, bespoke furniture manufacture or beams for restoration projects. For any of you who are thinking of getting into milling yourselves we are also able to offer courses covering all types of milling from basic to advanced levels. Each course is tailored to meet your requirements. These courses are very popular with tree surgeons as they enable them to turn a timber into a high value saleable product rather than just firewood. If you would like any more information on any aspect of mobile timber conversion please give us a ring on 07724 700859 or e mail on: richard@mobilesawing.co.uk. |
